Marium’s Story, a widow village woman

Marium’s Story, a widow village woman

This real and true story is about a widow woman Marium, her struggle and how she manages to marry her daughter. The story involves a jeweller whose shop was in the village of widow woman.

This true event occurred before the separation of India and Pakistan and this was told by my grandfather. One of his friends (Ahmad) lived in suburban area of Rawalpindi. They were friends from childhood and sometimes he went to meet his friend in Rawalpindi. This event occurred with a widow woman of that suburban area. Her name was Marium. Grandfather friend respected her a lot. Her husband was an honest person. They were living a happy life. After three years of their marriage a pretty little girl was born and they named her Noor. When the girl was 2 years old her father died because of severe fever. This was a huge tragedy in life of Marium but she faced it with huge courage and also maintained her respect and dignity in the village. Her parents were also not alive but she had a brother who was married and lived in another village with her wife. He wanted Marium to marry his brother in law who was a father of four children and his wife was also on death bed but Mariumm didn’t accept this proposal and because of which her brother ended relations with her. She already didn’t aspect anything from her brother. She did work as a labourer and brought up her little angle Noor.

When she became young she was exactly like her mom. She was very handy and shy. She was beautiful and because of this many proposals came but Marium wanted to give her hand into a respectful and well earning man. When Noor was 18 year old a proposal came from a nearby village and was according to her mother wishes. She accepted this proposal for Noor but also requested for some time because she want to make some things for her daughter. She didn’t have much to give her daughter and she can’t took loan from anyone as everyone in the village were poor and why did people give her money as she was a widow and she couldn’t pay it back. She didn’t succeed in getting the money for her daughter marriage. Ahmad, friend of grandpa said her to sale her house and in this way she could have the money to marry her daughter but Marium didn’t have anything else except this house for living. When Ahmad told about this situation to grandpa then he decided to help this poor lady by himself. Grandfather was about to disclose this in front of family to collect the money but at the same instance Ahmad came and said that in the last week Marium did her daughter marriage with great enthusiasm. Marium did all the things greatly for her daughter and also gave her everything she wanted to give her. She also managed beautifully all the arrangements of marriage. All village was amazed on this that how she did it as she was a poor lady. Ahmad said that she invited all the village people and the renowned ones. Also the food was very good and the way it was present was marvellous.

Everyone was amazed and if any one asks her about this she only said that it is the givings of my lord and He is the one who secured my dignity. No one could raise finger on their character as they were respected women and everyone thought that she must be helped by Noor in laws. Now four years were passed and everyone now forgot about everything.

Ahmad Uncle son’s marriage was near and he wanted to buy jewellery from Rawalpindi and therefore he talked to grandpa and grandpa said to take his village jeweller with him as he knew about the quality of the gold as it will be easy to buy gold from the market. Ahmad agreed on this. The jeweller of their village lived in another village but his shop was in Ahmad’s village. His work didn’t go well in the village as most of the people are poor and only came when there is marriage occasion. Four years back this jeweller was robbed by a guy who came to him on a horse. It occurred in the morning when jeweller was coming from his house which was in another village to open the shop.

The rider saw this jeweller he didn’t know about him but the way he was carrying his sac made him thing that something must be precious in that sac. So he decided to snatch that sac from the jeweller. So he did it. After that jeweller took inspector from a nearby station and went to search for that robber. After 15 minutes of search they found a horse at a distance. They moved quickly towards that rider and the inspector suspected that why the rider is not moving so quickly even though he knew that we are coming to catch him. When they reached the rider and searched him they didn’t find anything and so he was not taken into custody. This was what happened four years back with that jeweller. Now Ahmad came to Rawalpindi with that jeweller to buy sets for his sons wife but they didn’t get anything unique so Ahmad decided to go to Lahore therefore three of them Ahmad, jeweller and grandpa took train to Lahore where they met  that rider who took the sac of the jeweller. Ahmad was sharp in making someone to share his secrets. So while talking he was successful in making him speak about the incidence so he told them everything.

He said that he did rob this jeweller but when they were coming to catch him he threw the sac with his full strength to his left and that’s why he didn’t move fast so that inspector could not account him of the robbery. He went back to the place to find that sac but couldn’t found it so he went to his friend house. He was not a thief but he needed money at that time. But it was Allah wills that I remained at right path. My friend helped me then at that time. Ahmad and grandpa knew where that sac fell but they didn’t tell the jeweller as it was Allah will to help that poor lady.
